Types of keywords

There’s 4 main types of keywords you should know before planning an SEO strategy.

Each type of keyword has a different intent behind it and requires different types of content to be made because the searcher is in a different stage of the marketing funnel.

1.) Informational keywords

When someone searches an informational keyword, their intent is to answer a specific question.

An example is someone who searches “what is seo” on Google or “how to lose weight fast”.

Someone who searches an informational keyword is not ready to make any purchases yet, just get information.

2.) Navigational keywords

When someone searches a navigational keyword, their intent is to find a specific website.

An example is someone who searches “netflix” or “Amazon” on Google.

Someone who searches a navigational keyword knows exactly what they’re looking for and they just want to get there as fast as possible.

3.) Commercial keywords

When someone searches a commercial keyword, their intent is to shop around because they’re getting ready to make a purchase.

An example is someone who searches for “airbnb alternative” on Google.

Someone who searches a commercial keyword knows that they want to purchase something from somewhere but they may not know exactly what, where, or when yet.

4.) Transactional keywords

When someone searches a transactional keyword, their intent is to complete an action or a purchase.

Transactional keywords are the real money makers because someone searching a transactional keyword is in the market to buy something as soon as possible.

An example is someone who searches “best dentist near me” or “buy a car online” on Google.

Someone who searches a transactional keyword is at the bottom of the funnel and they are very close to completing a transaction.

Transactional keywords have the highest conversion rates and generate the most revenue.

The reason it’s helpful to think about the intent of someone searching a keyword is because the intent tells you whether a searcher is looking to buy something soon or just gather information.

If you have a long list of keywords you wanna rank for, it’s a good idea to separate those keywords by intent because google prefers if you have a good balance of keywords on your website.

The intent of the keyword also determines what type of content you create for that keyword because each user is at a different stage of the sales funnel.

For example, for an informational keyword you might write a blog post or create a how-to tutorial.

But for a transactional keyword you should create a product page or a service page that is more sales-y.
